Inspiration for Kids: Educators Podcast
Episode Overview
In this episode, I explore one of the most sensitive parts of working with children—how to talk about taboo or difficult subjects. These conversations can feel uncomfortable, but they’re essential for helping children understand the world around them.
I share practical tips and strategies to approach these topics in a respectful, clear, and age-appropriate way. You’ll learn how to create a safe space where children feel comfortable asking questions and sharing their thoughts openly, without fear of judgment.
What You’ll Learn
- How to communicate about sensitive topics respectfully
- Ways to create a safe and supportive environment for open dialogue
- Tips for listening actively and responding clearly
- How to set healthy boundaries according to children’s age and needs
Try These Exercises
To help you practice these ideas, try the following activities:
1. The Question Box
Set up a box or jar where children can anonymously drop questions about things they’re curious or unsure about. Dedicate time each week to answer these questions honestly and at an appropriate level.
2. Role-Playing Scenarios
Practice common situations where taboo topics might come up. For example, simulate a child asking about body changes or family differences. This helps adults prepare calm, respectful responses ahead of time.
3. Feelings Check-In
Start discussions by asking children how they feel about the topic before sharing facts or explanations. Use simple phrases like, “How do you feel when you hear about this?” This helps validate their emotions and guide your responses
