Five Ways to Beat School and Exam Burnout: Tips for Students

School and exams can sometimes feel really hard and tiring. When you have too much work or feel stressed all the time, it’s called burnout. But don’t worry! Here are five easy ways you can feel better, stay strong, and enjoy learning again.

1. Take Care of Yourself (Self-Care)

Taking breaks and doing things you love helps your brain rest and feel happy.

Fun Activity: 5-Minute Stretch Break
Step 1: When studying or doing homework, set a timer for every hour.
Step 2: When the timer rings, stand up and stretch your arms, legs, and back.
Step 3: Take deep breaths and relax your shoulders.
Step 4: Go back to your work feeling refreshed!

Fun Activity: Do Something Fun Weekly
Step 1: Pick one day to do something fun you enjoy—playing outside, drawing, or hanging out with friends.
Step 2: Make sure to take time for fun each week, even when exams are coming.

2. Set Healthy Boundaries

It’s important to stop working sometimes so you don’t get too tired.

Fun Activity: Homework Stop Time
Step 1: Decide a time in the evening when you will stop doing homework (like 7 PM).
Step 2: After that time, put away your books and relax.
Step 3: Tell your family about your stop time so they can remind you!

Fun Activity: End-Of-Study Routine
Step 1: When you finish studying for the day, close your books and pack your bag.
Step 2: Do something relaxing—listen to music or take a short walk.
Step 3: Tell yourself, “I worked hard today, now it’s time to rest.”

3. Talk to Friends and Family

Sharing how you feel helps you feel less stressed.

Fun Activity: Weekly Chat with a Friend or Family Member
Step 1: Pick a friend or family member you trust.
Step 2: Set a time each week to talk about school and how you’re feeling.
Step 3: Listen to each other and give support.

Fun Activity: Create a Support Group
Step 1: Find classmates who also feel stressed about exams.
Step 2: Meet online or in person to share study tips and encourage each other.
Step 3: Celebrate small wins together!

4. Practice Mindfulness and Relaxation

Doing calm activities helps reduce stress and improve focus.

Fun Activity: Deep Breathing Exercise
Step 1: Sit comfortably and close your eyes.
Step 2: Breathe in slowly through your nose for 4 seconds.
Step 3: Hold your breath for 4 seconds.
Step 4: Breathe out slowly through your mouth for 6 seconds.
Step 5: Repeat three times when feeling stressed.

Fun Activity: Mindful Walk Outside
Step 1: Take a short walk outside without talking or using your phone.
Step 2: Notice the sounds, colors, and smells around you.
Step 3: Focus on walking slowly and calmly for 5–10 minutes.

5. Focus on What You Can Control

You can’t control everything, but you can control how you prepare and stay positive.

Fun Activity: Daily Study Goals
Step 1: Each morning, pick one small goal for studying (like “I will finish one math chapter”).
Step 2: Work on that goal without worrying about everything else.
Step 3: When done, give yourself a little reward—like a favorite snack or break.

Fun Activity: Reflection Journal
Step 1: At the end of the day, write down two things you did well and one thing that was hard but you tried your best.
Step 2: Read your notes when you feel nervous or tired to remind yourself how strong you are.

Remember!

Burnout from school or exams can happen to anyone, but using these simple tips can help you feel happier and more ready to learn. Taking care of yourself is just as important as studying hard!
